In April 2020, The U.S. Department of Defense released a statement about three unclassified Navy videos that had been circulating on the Internet for a few years, after being "released" by Tom DeLonge from To The Stars Academy (formerly of Blink-182.)
Since then, several former military, intelligence, and other governmental officials have made credible claims of encounters with vehicles that outperform our best military hardware by orders of magnitude, exhibiting characteristics that include the five observables as defined by the former head of the Pentagon's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP). Many of these interactions occurred at highly secretive nuclear bases, and the crews at those bases have made public statements (Preview link).
Cmdr. David Fravor, in particular, has described an event with three other airmen in witness where he engaged with a tic tac shaped craft that was approximately the same size as his fighter. In that encounter, the craft reacted to their presence, responded by intelligently mirroring the US fighters until it was able to zip hundreds of miles away in a second or so, while in crystal-clear visibility conditions. The radar operators back up his story.
The New York Times has reported briefings to Congress by Eric W. Davis, a government contractor employed by Aerospace Corp (a huge defense contractor) about retrievals from off-world vehicles. If he were making this up, one would expect that he would be fired by now, not granting additional interviews on the subject. Bob Lazar, the man who was single-handedly (and accidentally) responsible for starting the Area 51 craze famously said that he worked on such vehicles.
People have said the government is incompetent and couldn't keep this secret for 70+ years. People in-the-know have said it is the easiest secret in the world to keep because every time it leaks, nobody believes it. Some have said that we have a deadline, ranging from a date that the "aliens" will out themselves to our planet heading toward imminent irreversible catastrophic climate change.
